I want to start this review by letting everyone know I have seen this show twice in person and it never ceases to blow me away. I was unable to watch this original cast live and in person, but thank you Disney for giving us this gorgeous piece of theater.
I am dumbfounded by these one and two star reviews calling this musical "trash" and "utter nonsense. I have been listening to the original broadway album since it was released on major music streaming services five years ago. Being able to put a face to these incredible voices is an absolute treat. To those who fail to understand what the hype is about, I feel sorry that you do not enjoy and feel the same emotions that I feel when watching. Seeing Leslie Odom Jr. as Aaron Burr, perform "Wait For It" brought a type of characterization that you simply cannot get from a recording on Spotify. His portrayal of Mr. Burr brings a sense of vulnerability and encapsulates the emotions of the human experience that I never experienced with other actors in the role. Similarly, hearing Christopher Jackson as George Washington sing "One Last Time" made me overwhelmed joy (not to mention his voice is butter) These are the voices I have spent the past five years with. I listen to them when I drive to work, go to the gym, or when I'm hanging out with friends. Now I have a live production I can watch at my fingertips!
Is the story 100% historically accurate? No, of course not. Is the story at its core true? Yes, I believe it is. There are too many characters that made an impact on Hamilton's life to include in a two and a half hour musical. Some things are exaggerated and some timelines are off. For example, Burr and Hamilton do not duel after Jefferson wins the presidency, it is years later for a separate, but similar matter. A ton of research went into this show, like the relationship of Hamilton, Lafayette, Mulligan, and Laurens.
The raps are quick witted and the music never gets old. This story has a ton of implementation for our current generation. Also, it is safe to say that Hamilton's vision of America is pretty close to where we are today in terms of capitalism and our federal government. Jefferson and Hamilton GREATLY influenced and shaped America. We owe a lot to them and I think this show eloquently gives them the credit they deserve.
